Brief

Dual is a collaboration between flautist Sylvain Barou, saxophonist Denis Guivarc’h and houd player & composer Smadj. It is a fusion of Oriental and Occidental musics, a mixture of acoustic and electronic sounds. I already did many artworks for Smadj but i am particulary proud of this 3D compositing. I also design a logo for his brand new pSChiit record label.

Brief

Guadian of the african griots culture, DJELI MOUSSA DIAWARA is a Guinean singer, kora player and composer. He shared the stage with Mory Kante’s during many years. After realising a photo shoot with him last year, I design with these picts the cover and the sleeve design of his first album for the Kamiyad record label.

Project Brief

TONY ALLEN is a Nigerian drummer who actualy lives in Paris. With Fela Kuti, he was one of the primary co-founders of the genre of Afrobeat music. This amazing artist was one of the first Comet Record artist I have work for in 2001 with the INK agency. It’s been 15 years now that I’m making illustrations for him and its record label.

Tony Allen has spread Afrobeat to the corners of  the globe a perfect synthesis of tradition and sophistication – his various collaborations with great artists from all genres and styles are a truly proof of his openness. The original Afrobeat patterns recorded by him are revisited and produced by the Afrobeat Makers with 12 exclusive Afro break beats on every editions. I made a vintage style illustrations series for the three publishings.

Brief

Since his early days, SMADJ make a bridge between Middle Eastern and Electronic music. In 2000 he became recognized on an international scale for his signature blending of acoustic and electronic sounds. After joined fellow Oud magician, French musician Mehdi Haddab for a special project “DuOuD”, SMADJ return solo for the album “Fuck the DJ” in 2014 and the Ep “Oud Solotronic” in 2016. As we are friend for a long time, I could not resist the temptation to make these two illustrations and artworks for him.

Brief

It is between Paris and Bamako that DONSO was given life, as the illegitimate son of the cosmic universe of Malian hunters and the down to earth world of insomniac electro music. This World Music project lead by Headbanger’s signed artist Krazy Baldhead was an occasion to deliver a psychedelic photo editing concept inspired by woodoo masks. Again a great Comet Records project with a wild open creation field.

ELISA DO BRASIL is the resident DJ and the creator of the famous Rex Club parties call Massive. She is one of the most important artist for the french Drum N Bass since 15 years now. She ask me for a tailored illustration with precise elements request (a compass, the moon, waves…) for her new album Follow Your Bliss.

With this new album, Kiala, the founder-guitarist-singer of GHETTO BLASTER and musician of Fela Kuti on Egypt 70, surrounded himself with The AFROBLASTER, renowned musicians such as Cyril Atef, Hilaire Panda, Stéphane Blemondo, Jean- Max Milien, Eric Legnini, Benoit Sourisse, to offer this groove-afrobeat album, with lyrics committed to the caliber of his mentor Fela Kuti, with whom he toured around the world.

Electrified, amplified andfuelled by creative fire, SPEED CARAVAN charge towards a psychedelic horizon; slaloming through rock, dance, electro, hip hop, world and other music – blazing a trail with raised fists, a hand brake turn and a sharp spray of desert sand. As the first solo album of my fellow friend Mehdi Haddab, Kalashnik Love was a good occasion to show him my graphic skills. It was also a fun time spend together for created the concept of his album cover.

These last years, Afrobeat kept growing ; many emerging bands in the world chose to take on Fela’s legacy and to carry the flame, but also to emancipate themselves from the Black President’s music and rules. These have been digested in their various influences to lead to a complex afrobeat tree, made of multiple branches, all tangled up with other music genres. That’s what this is all about here : selecting bands and tunes that bring something new.
